About John Mitchell
The focus of my work is the human figure alone or in relation to other figures, in various settings. My visual sources include magazines, newspapers, film, TV, illustrated books, the work of other artists and my own photographs and drawings.
Images selected intuitively suggest the structure and ambience of a painting, providing a point of departure. During the painting process I attempt to withhold interpretation, allowing chance and intuition to influence the discovery and combining of images.
This approach offers ways into areas which may be out of conscious awareness. I hope that viewers form their individual responses to the reverberations produced by the combinations of images, colour and texture in my paintings.
I work mainly in oils, which offer me a particular fluency and variety of mark making. I work on canvas, board and paper. Each affects the surface of the painting in subtley different ways, influencing the atmosphere of the work.
I am based in Steyning, West Sussex. Most paintings are for sale. For prices please contact me.
